10 Ways to Spend Your Snow Day
With Young Children

Pin Me <3
Recently we had our first snowfall of the year. Which means we were able to enjoy a full snow day! Snow days are always fun with everyone home and also a good excuse to be lazy. However, if you have young children, the lazy attitude does not last for long. So when I saw snow in the forecast I made sure to put together a good list of activities to keep us busy on our snow day! So here are my ideas on how-to spend your snow day with your young children.

1. Crafting

You had to know that crafting was going to be one of the ideas! We love crafts in our house. There are so many great craft ideas for snowmen. Most of them are pretty easy too! Check out my toilet paper snowman here.
2. Big Breakfast
A snow day is the perfect day to stay in your pajamas and enjoy a good breakfast. We enjoyed pancakes and scrapple this past weekend. However, egg casseroles, French toast, or waffles are also a good win! We enjoy cooking together and enjoying our creations! If you are unsure of where to begin with your kids in the kitchen check out my post about surviving cooking with kids!
3. Build a Tent

Enjoying our little tent we created!
Turn your living room into an area of magical fun! Grab some sheets, blankets, chairs and clothespins and create an oasis from the cold. I try to have some glow sticks on hand this time of year (actually all year) for the girls to enjoy in their tent. You could leave an opening near the T.V. and enjoy your favorite snacks and a movie while snuggling in the tent! Don’t want to go through all that trouble? Throw a blanket over the table. Kids will love it!

4. Play with Snow
I purposely phrased this as “with” snow because playing IN the snow is entirely different than what I am talking about. My oldest is now old enough that she enjoys playing IN the snow. However, my 2-year-old still has trouble walking and moving around in the snow and she does not like the cold. So I laid out some towels, pulled out the sand toys and brought in a bucket of snow! Grab some watercolors for some snow magic! My girls loved being able to play with the snow inside!
5. Snow Cream
While the snow is inside, make sure to set some aside for snow cream. This little treat is fun! It’s amazing how yummy it is AND simple to make! Add some toppings for an out of this world treat that is SNOW delicious. Check out the recipe from the Kitchen is my Playground here.
6. Bake Something Yummy
My husband has a tradition that on snow days he bakes cupcakes. It normally only happens once a year, and it is ALWAYS on a snow day. They are truly yummy. Find your own special treat to cook up with your kiddos. Turn on some music and twirl about while making your treats! It truly does make it taste better!

7. Paint
I know I already mentioned crafting. However, painting is a little different. Let your kids just paint! We tried some pudding paint, just simply dyed the vanilla pudding. Yummy and artful. Another cool way is to use stale marshmallows and stamp with them. We love to paint in this house. If your kids are a little older ask them what tools they could use to paint with. My kiddos always wear their paint smocks. They are amazing and the best I have found. Check them out here.

8. Play Games
My girls love hide n’ seek and Candyland. Pull out some favorites or look up a new game online. I recently saw this post on Instagram (if it is you please comment so I can give you credit!), that everyone collected 2 items from around the house and put it into a bowl. Then they had to pick out 3 items and create a game. I know my 4-year-old loves to make up games, so this may be a great idea for your family!
9. Movie Time
A good movie is hard to beat. I try not to have the television on too much, however, sometimes on a snow day we all need the chance to be lazy. Enjoy a little movie and your snacks you have already made 🙂 It really is so nice to just cuddle on the couch with your littles and enjoy how small they are right now. They soon will be big and they won’t want to cuddle with us during a movie. Enjoy it. Even if you have a list a mile long, enjoy the time to snuggle.

10. Play IN the Snow
You had to know it was going to be on my list. Get bundled up and go outside. On these cold winter days it is hard to get the motivation to get out. However, on a snow day being outside is more than just being cold. You can build a snowman (which I am accepting tips on how to make a cool snowman), have a snowball fight, create a snow angel, go sledding (not really in Delaware) or slide down the playground slide covered in snow. Enjoy the fun. Melody had so much fun just running around. I am looking forward to when Emory wants to do the same thing. Then go inside and warm up with some hot cocoa and marshmallows (the not stale kind!)
There you have it. My list of ways to enjoy the snow day with young children. I leave you with this, there will be plenty of lazy snow days, where everyone sleeps in and is lazy all day. However, for now try your best to enjoy the little moments of the day. A snow day is a great way to have fun with your child. Enjoy it! Embrace it! Today is a blessing and it will create amazing memories.
