Counting Blessings Day by Day
As we head into November, I don’t know about you but it makes me start to think about all the blessings in my life. Something about thanksgiving right around the corner makes you stop and think about being grateful. I am not sure why we do not take the time to do this other times of the year, but we all certainly do in this season. I read this book once that talked about the importance of being grateful and how it leads to contentment in your life. This is when my family started the Blessing Jar.
The beginning of the Blessing Jar
The first year I just wanted a way to focus our attention on Thanksgiving. So, on November 1 we started writing blessings each evening. My plans were to open it on Thanksgiving and read them from the month. That of course did not happen and we ended up saving them for New Years Day. My husband and I were so pleased with this that we decided we wanted to do it all year instead. A continual gratitude attitude.
How does it work?
Each evening you take a piece of paper (we use colorful construction paper) and write one thing you are grateful for about that day. My daughter loves this. She often says things like Mommy and Daddy, or flowers. However, as she is growing she has started naming events that have happened. Like mommy and Melody date day. 🙂 That one of course makes my heart so happy!
It truly is simple. Each person gets their OWN piece of paper. I tried writing it all on one but it just does not have the same effect as you watch the blessing grow in the jar.
How do you make it?
First go find a jar, basket even a washed pasta sauce jar can do the trick. I found my mason jar at a flea market filled with jewelry, and figured it would be perfect.
Next cut strips of paper about one inch by 3 inches.
Finally, write down your blessings.
I hope this is something you choose to do with your family. It has brought mine so much joy. It was fun to read them on New Years and see not only the many ways God blessed us, but also how my daughters have grown. Often we think about how we can make a difference in the New Year with all of our resolutions of change. We often forget to reflect on our past year and think about all the wonderful things that have happened. So take the time this November to show some gratitude.
