Make the Most Out of Your Life
With this Little Trick
I don’t know about you but I always make plans. I make plans, I even write them on the calendar. But then something “comes” up and the plans change. One of your children’s friends is having a party, and you couldn’t dare miss that. Or some dinner with the family needs to happen. There is always something that happens in the midst of our well laid plans. Well I want to share with you the little trick that helped us to make the most out of our year. Calendar planning truly is a key to having a fulfilled life.
We Got on The Same Page
We both knew we wanted to make the most out of the summer. Every year we got through the summer with a list of things we wanted to do but never did. This year we wanted to make sure we did that. So we agreed, that the plans we made we had to keep. This was a huge part of it, because when something else came up we could say no easily knowing we both were in agreement. Also, know that you will not be able to do everything you want to do in the same time period. There were a few weekends where 2 or 3 things were going on and we had to pick one.
We Made Lists
The whole family participated in this. My husband, myself and my 4 year old all created our own list of things we wanted to do that summer. Some of the items were mini-golfing, going to the beach and boardwalk, eating ice cream, seeing a hot air balloon festival. These were some of our favorites that we had listed. We then came together and discussed the items. The things that were the same we definitely did. The things only one person wanted to do we put away for next year. (Not forgotten) Then we created the ULTIMATE LIST.
My husband is in the reserves. So once a month he has to go in and work the weekend. We wrote those in first and then the weekends he had to work. Next, came the items that only happened on a certain weekend. These items included a hot air balloon festival, a steam engine show and birthdays. Finally we planned in other items that followed that could happen on any weekend. For weather dependent things we planned those with something that was not so if it rained we could just switch it around. This happened to be a very effective way to plan.
We Paid for Everything
So up until now you were probably trying to figure out what the magic trick was, right? Well here it is. We purchased all of our tickets, everything that needed a ticket or a hotel or even gas to get there we purchased. For the gas we put gas cash in an envelope. This was the best! It made sure we had to follow through on the commitment. Even things that did not really need purchased ahead tickets, we still got them so we would have to still go. This was the magic trick. And all you moms out there, I also lined up babysitters for all the date activities. No last minute hey we can do this BUT…
We are planning to do this again for winter. Especially around Christmas because there are so many exciting things happening we don’t want to miss out or forget something. However, some tips on this, make sure you have a good calendar. It truly is very helpful for everyone to be able to look and see what is coming up. Also, let family know this ahead of time. We live close to our family and sometimes family expectations can be hard. Just make sure you have written down any important family things ahead of time. Finally, enjoy it! Take pictures and do not be disheartened if it doesn’t play out exactly how you thought.
Also, my husband and I have decided to not just do this for weekends as a family, but also planning out date nights and dates with our girls. Every other week we will switch the girl we are with so we have special time with each of them every month.
I encourage you to try it as the holiday season approaches and the new year, take a night and plan it out, purchase what you need and make some memories with your family!
