Essential Supplies for Crafting with Littles
I am a crafter. Some people do not like crafts, but for me, it’s just the way to go. My friends always comment on how I have ALL these craft supplies to do crafts with, and of course I argue (because you can never have enough craft supplies). However, in all honesty it doesn’t take that many items to have a successful craft storage for random and fun crafting. So, here is my list of ESSENTIAL supplies for crafting with your littles.
1. Paper Plates
Does not matter which kind, but the cheap flimsy ones are the best for crafts. I use these AT LEAST once a week. They are so handy.
Here is my list of useful ways to use paper plates.
1. Putting paint on
2. Using for mask
3. Anything that you need a circle for (it is already provided in the middle of the plate)
2. Popsicle Sticks
Popsicle sticks are amazing! They have been a lifesaver for me so many times.
How to use them:
1. As a handle in fruit or veggie paint stamping
2. Boat sails
3. Velcro on the ends turns these into a fun little quiet building activity.
4. Creating last minute picture frames for family members (this is handy when you forgot a birthday… oops)
3. Googly Eyes
I buy the large bag of assorted sizes and colors (yes, they have color googly eyes! Crafting world stepping up their game). These are self-explanatory, but they are super handy for different random crafts you decide to do.
I am a big supporter of paint. There is an endless supply of fun crafts to do with your littles. One of the best memories with my oldest (who loves paint) was finger painting with her. She had so much fun. Do not get overwhelmed by paint. Put down some newspaper on the floor or go outside. Paint can be fun, I promise!
Are you ready for my soapbox? Yes, I have a soapbox about crayons. I taught elementary school for 3 years. Before that I taught preschool. Now, I am a mom of two little girls. I say that because I know how important crayons are to children. They are the most important tool a little has in the art world. So please, please, please buy Crayola crayons. They are the best, most reliable crayons on this planet! (ok that may be extreme) However, they are the best. So please do not bother with saving a few cents on the rose art brand. It is not worth it! Okay soapbox is now over.
6. Construction paper
I almost forgot paper. How this is possible I am unsure. I do not use paper as often as one may guess. I like to be creative, but it is an essential part of my crafting toolbox. And it really does not have to be construction. Sometimes I use white and have my girls color it the color it needs to be.
7. Kid Scissors
I recommend practicing cutting with your child around 2 and a half. Just have them cut paper, not on any lines, just the paper. Also make sure to go over safety rules, such as holding the bottom while walking.
These are a great beginner scissor. Click on picture for link!
8. Glue Sticks
I prefer glue sticks to the runny Elmer’s glue. I like this because it is easier for kiddos to use on their own.
9. Hot Glue
This is more for you than for your child. My friend never had a hot glue gun before, and I was blown away. She pulled it out for the first time to fix her shoe. Hot glue is a useful tool for everyday things as well as making sure your child’s crafts stay together.
Stickers are fun for so many things. They can make a project exciting. They can also keep a child busy while you make dinner OR need to make a doctor’s appointment on the phone.
There you have it. Ten essential craft supplies. These will help you to complete so many different crafts. I always try to keep these supplies on hand. That way I have the tools needed when something doesn’t take as long as planned or we are sitting around bored.
Is there anything you would want to add to this list? What are some of your favorite craft supplies for your littles? Comment Below!
